Grimentz lies at 1570 m, where the Corne de Sorebois (2896 m) divides the Val d'Anniviers (Eifischtal) into the Zinal Valley and the Moiry Valley. The traditional chalet-style hotels blend harmoniously with ancient village buildings, interspersed with numerous grain stores and barns. Grimentz lays great store by its traditions. Since 1930, residents have been decorating their houses year after year with a colourful profusion of geraniums – a magnificent, frequently photographed spectacle for visitors from all over the world.
In summer, you will be charmed by its unspoilt natural splendour, surprised by the sublime old sun-darkened granaries, dazzled by the beauty of the balconies awash with red geraniums, and by the sparkling panorama of the Moiry Glacier
Typical Valais products are on sale every Friday at the large market in the old village square. The 15th century Burgher’s House is the centre of Grimentz village life. You will also find cellars where glacier wine matures in ancient oak barrels. These casks containing the ‘Vin des Glaciers’ are continuously topped up, so they never become empty. The oldest wine is 125 years old. There are about 100 cellars in Grimentz where barrels of glacier wine are stored.
Discover the rich variety of fauna and flora on a walk to the Moiry Reservoir. The Moiry Glacier with its Glacier Falls is one of the most spectacular in the Alps. Grimentz and the neighbouring village of St. Jean boast more than 100 km of signed mountain bike routes, ranging from an easy beginners’ stretch to the Grand Raid Cristalp race course. Adrenalin junkies can put their courage to the test by canyoning in the breath-taking gorges of the Gougra from Moiry to Grimentz, or bungy-jumping further down in the valley.
